Canadian Summer McIntosh managed to repeat the result of the legendary Michael Phelps - the 18-year-old swimmer has already broken three world records at the Canadian national championships.
That's why the comparison is apt - only the famous American Phelps managed to set three world records in one tournament, along with five more victories.
McIntosh set a third record in the 400-meter individual medley - 4:23,65 minutes. Previously, in the Olympic pool (50 meters long), she broke records in the 400-meter freestyle - 3:54,18, and then in the 200-meter individual medley - 2:05,70.
In addition, she won in five other disciplines, repeating Phelps' result from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when he had exactly the same performance - three world records and five more victories.
"As I prepared for the 400m individual medley, I knew I could do something really special. This event is simply the best of my career. I believe that world records are there to be broken. So, when I finish my career, I want my times to be as good as possible," said McIntosh, who is also preparing to break the world record in the 200m freestyle, and is among the top five of all time in that discipline.
And whose records did Macintosh break?
In the 400 freestyle, Australia's Ariarne Titmus, the reigning Olympic and world champion (3:55,38). In the 200 individual medley, she broke the decade-old record of Hungary's Katinka Hossu. McIntosh wants to "explode" in Singapore, where the World Championships begin on July 11th.
- My biggest challenge is the 200-meter butterfly, I'm close, but it will be difficult to break the record. I really don't know if I'm capable of it at this point in my career - concluded McIntosh.
This record is the oldest and only one remaining from the era of so-called technological doping, when people swam in suits, and has been held by China's Liu Zige (2:01.81) since October 2009.
McIntosh swims that section in 2.02 minutes, and to succeed, she plans to move to Texas and train with Bob Bauman, the coach of Michael Phelps, Leon Marchand...
Samer already has an impressive collection of medals: three golds and a silver from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, eight medals - four golds from the World Championships and as many more from the World Short Course Swimming Championships.
