Kenyan athlete Ruth Chepngetich, the world record holder in the women's marathon, has been provisionally suspended for a positive doping test, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced today.
In March this year, Čepngetic tested positive for a banned diuretic and a substance used to conceal doping. The AIU said in a statement that the competitor voluntarily accepted a temporary suspension while the case is investigated.
Ruth Chepngetich set the world record in the women's marathon in October last year in Chicago, with a time of two hours, nine minutes and 56 seconds, improving the previous record by almost two minutes.
The AIU did not provide a timeframe for when a final decision in her disciplinary proceedings might be made.
