Cyclists competing in the 80th anniversary Vuelta voted today to continue the competition, but did not rule out the possibility of abandoning the race if pro-Palestinian demonstrations due to the participation of the Israeli team continue to disrupt the competition.
Pro-Palestinian protests at the Vuelta began two weeks ago, causing two stages to be shortened - the 11th (last Wednesday) and yesterday's, 16th stage.
The main demand of the protesters is the exclusion of the Israel Premier Tech team from the competition.
Today's stage, the 17th, passed without major incidents after authorities limited the number of people who climbed the Moredero peak, which was the finish line.
The victory on the Moredero climb was recorded by Italian Giulio Pellicari (Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe) with a total time of three hours and 37 minutes.
The second fastest time was recorded by Briton Tom Piddock, 16 seconds behind, while Australian Jai Hindley crossed the finish line in third (18 seconds behind).
Dane Jonas Vingegor finished today's stage in fourth place, maintaining his lead in the overall standings.
The Visma rider leads with a total time of 64 hours, 53 minutes and 55 seconds, second place is taken by Portuguese Joao Almeida, 50 seconds behind, and third is Pidok, two minutes and 28 seconds behind.
Tomorrow is the 18th stage, which brings a time trial through Valladolid, which could present a new challenge for the organizers.
The final, 21st stage of the Vuelta, is planned for Sunday in Madrid.
