Italian Matteo Franzoso has died after falling during training in Chile over the weekend, the National Winter Sports Federation (FISI) said.
The 25-year-old downhill skier was taken by helicopter to the intensive care unit of a clinic in Santiago and put into a coma after an accident that occurred on Saturday on the La Parva slope.
"This is a tragedy for the family and for our sport," FISI president Flavio Roda said in a statement.
"A drama that brings us back to the same state of mind as a little less than a year ago, when Matilde Lorenzi passed away. It is absolutely necessary to do everything possible to prevent such episodes from recurring."
In 2023, Franzoso placed 28th in the World Cup super-G in Cortina d'Ampezzo, which was his best result at the highest level of competition.
