Montenegrin para tennis player Luka Bakić advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Championships in Helsingborg.
He defeated German Mio Wagner 3:0 in the last round and finished his performance in the first group with a mediocre performance.
Bakić was defeated by Frenchman Mateo Bohas 3:1 at the start of the competition yesterday.
In the deciding match, the second set was crucial, in which Bakić managed to save four set points and convert his third for a 2:0 lead.
This will be Bakić's second consecutive quarterfinal at the European Championships, after reaching the top eight in Sheffield two years ago. He also made the quarterfinals at the World Championships in Granada and the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
"The result is convincing, but the match was not easy or naive at all, especially in the second set. I managed to get out of that set in the best way possible and win it. In the third, I broke away early and managed to preserve the victory. A very important victory for the continuation of the tournament," said Bakić.
His opponent in the quarterfinals (Saturday at 1:45 p.m.) will be Spaniard Marlon Lopez.
Lopez, a debutant at the championship, opened the tournament with a loss to Filip Radović, who was disqualified from the European Championship, even though he had made it to the quarterfinals.
Radović, after a surprising defeat to Poland's Pavel Wlodika in the second round of the group stage, threw his racket, which bounced off the floor and ended up in the electronic display.
The report, signed by match referee Matej Hamran, states that Radović was removed from the championship due to inappropriate behavior and damage to the display.
"The referee decided to disqualify Radović from the competition under Rule 3.5.2.8 of the Statutes of the World Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) - Rules for International Competitions," the decision states.
