The international table tennis tournament, the "Saša Milačić - Podgorica Open" Memorial for younger categories, will be held on March 1 in Podgorica, and will bring together table tennis players from Montenegro and the region, it was announced by the Podgorica table tennis club Budućnost.
The tournament will be played at the university's Sports and Cultural Center, in memory of the long-time table tennis worker.
It will bring together competitors in the youngest cadet (born 2015 and younger), younger cadet (2013 and younger), cadet (2011 and younger) and junior (2007 and younger) categories.
It will start at nine, with the grand opening scheduled for 11 a.m.
Milačić, a long-time first team player, director and president of Buducnost, died from the effects of Covid-19 in mid-January 2021.
He was also an international referee, a member of the presidency of the Table Tennis Federation of the SFR Yugoslavia, and the president of the Table Tennis Federation of Montenegro.
"For his contribution to the development of table tennis as a meritorious sports worker, he was awarded the title of honorary member of the Balkan Table Tennis Union," STK Budućnost announced.
The capital posthumously awarded him a Golden Plaque for his contribution to the development of sports in Titograd and Podgorica.
Milacic will be remembered as the president of the Table Tennis Association, who raised the issue of independence in the World Table Tennis Union during the 1990s.
"We hope for a large participation of children from Montenegro and abroad, to start the year by remembering our esteemed sports colleague," the statement reads.
Participants can register until February 27th, and the draw will be held the day after.
