Preparations for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics were shaken yesterday in Bormio by a dramatic incident: one of Norway's most prominent skiers, Fredrik Möller, fell seriously during the first official downhill training session and was taken to hospital by helicopter.
The event took place on the famous, very demanding Stelvio track, where competitors move at speeds close to those driven on motorways - up to 140 kilometers per hour!
Möller lost his balance on a difficult curve, hit the edge and fell on the slope. After the fall, he managed to get up on his own, but he was clearly feeling pain in his shoulder. The medical team responded immediately with a field team and, shortly after, by helicopter, transporting him to the hospital in Sondrio, where doctors determined that he had (only) dislocated his left shoulder.
The Norwegian team confirmed that Meler will not compete in Saturday's downhill, although he remained conscious and did not suffer any injuries other than his shoulder joint.
Whether he will compete in the super-gi later remains uncertain and will be assessed at a later date.
This was a tough blow for the Norwegian team, as Möller was among the favorites after a series of good performances, as well as winning the World Cup super-G race in Bormio in 2024.
While the sports world quickly turned to results and competitions, Meller's colleagues and fans around the world rushed to send him messages of support and wishes for a speedy recovery.
