Norwegian speed skater Sander Eytrem (23), the world record holder in the 5.000-meter track, won the gold medal in that distance at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina.
He finished the race with a time of 6:03,95 minutes, which is also a new Olympic record, almost five seconds better than the previous one.
Second place went to Czech teenager Metodi Jilek (19), who finished the race in 6:06,48 minutes.
Third place and the bronze medal went to Italian Riccardo Lorello (23), who crossed the finish line in 6:09,22 minutes.
