American skier Lindsey Vonn announced today that she has successfully undergone surgery for the third time after a serious fall in the downhill at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina.
The 41-year-old Olympic champion took to Instagram to share photos from her hospital bed with her thumbs up, her left leg secured in a metal brace.
"I had my third surgery today and it was successful. Success has a completely different meaning today than it did on Sunday. I am making progress and, although recovery is slow, I know I will be fine," Von said.
The experienced American fell just 13 seconds into Sunday's race, after which she was transported from the track by helicopter.
A day later, she confirmed that she had suffered a complex tibia fracture, which is stable but requires multiple surgeries to adequately repair.
Her father, Alan Kildow, said that Vaughan was constantly surrounded by family members in the Treviso hospital.
"I am grateful to the incredible medical staff, friends and family who are by my side, as well as the overwhelming support and love I receive from around the world. Big congratulations to my teammates and all the athletes on Team USA who inspire me and give me a reason to cheer," Vonn added.
