American skier Lindsey Vonn returned home to the United States today after a week of treatment in a hospital in Italy, after breaking her left leg in the downhill at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina.
"I haven't been on my feet for over a week... I've been bedridden since the race. And even though I still can't stand, being back on home soil feels incredible," Vonn posted on social media X with an American flag emoji.
"A big thank you to everyone in Italy for taking such good care of me," Vaughn said.
The 41-year-old skier had four surgeries for a fractured left leg in Italy. It was previously announced that she would need more surgeries in the US.
Vonn hit a gate and fell 13 seconds into the race on February 8, after which she was airlifted to hospital. A day later, she confirmed that she had suffered a complex fracture of her tibia that required multiple surgeries to properly repair.
Nine days before that race, she tore her anterior cruciate ligament in her knee in a second fall in Switzerland, but despite that, she decided to participate in the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina.
