Olympic champion and world record holder in pole vault Armand Duplantis, world number one tennis player Carlos Alcaraz and famous cyclist Tadej Pogačar were nominated today for the prestigious Laureus Award for the best sportsman of 2025. Swedish athlete Duplantis, who has broken the world record 14 times since 2020, won the Laureus Award last year. Among the nominees are tennis players from Spain Carlos Alcaraz and Italy Jannik Siner, who won two Grand Slam titles each last year, as well as last year's Ballon d'Or winner, Paris Saint-Germain footballer Ousmane Dembele. Also in the competition are Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar, who won his fourth Tour de France title last year, and current Moto GP world champion from Spain Marc Marquez.
In the female athlete competition, American track and field athlete and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levron, American swimmer Katie Ledecky, as well as world record holder and Olympic 1.500-meter champion Kenyan Faith Kipyegon have been nominated.
Three-time consecutive winner of the Golden Ball, Spanish soccer player Ajtana Bonmati, is in the competition, as is world number one tennis player Belarusian Arina Sabalenka, and American sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, world champion in the 100, 200 meters and in the 4 x 100 meter relay, has been nominated.
The nominees for the best team are the England women's national football team, the McLaren Formula 1 team, the European golf Ryder Cup team, the Indian women's cricket team, the Oklahoma basketball team and the Paris Saint-Germain football team.
Nominees for the Breakthrough of the Year award include Formula 1 champion Lando Norris, Oklahoma basketball player Shai Gilges-Alexander and Paris Saint-Germain footballer Desiree Due.
American tennis player Amanda Anisimova, golfer Rory McIlroy and cyclist Simon Yates, among others, were nominated for the Comeback of the Year award.
The awards are decided by the Laureus Academy, and the award ceremony will take place on April 20th in Madrid.
The record holders with five awards each are Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic and Swiss tennis player Roger Federer.
