Last lap in Barcelona? Alonso hints at end of Formula 1 career

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has hinted that the end of his Formula One career could be near, after stating that this weekend's Barcelona Grand Prix race will likely be his last on his home track.

The Spaniard told reporters on Thursday that he was unlikely to compete in the next race in Barcelona, ​​which, following a change in the calendar, will not take place until 2028. Organizers have decided that the race will be held every other year in the future, so there will be no race in 2027.

“This will probably be my last race in Barcelona in Formula One,” said the 44-year-old Alonso.

Alonso stressed that his statement did not constitute an announcement of retirement, but admitted that he had not yet made a decision about continuing his career after this season.

"I have nothing in mind and after the summer I will decide whether to continue or not. Barcelona is not next year, and if I don't know what I will do next season, it is almost impossible to know what I will do in two years. Every race I compete in could be my last," said the Aston Martin driver.

One of the most successful drivers of his generation pointed out that the decision will also depend on how much his team manages to improve the car, which this season is not competitive enough to fight for the top of the standings.

Alonso became a sporting icon in Spain by winning the world championship titles in 2005 and 2006. Although he remains among the most respected drivers in the championship, his last victory was in 2013 at the Montmeló circuit near Barcelona, ​​which was his 32nd triumph in Formula 1.

Since then, he has failed to reach the top step of the podium again, despite showing over the years that he still possesses the top quality for the highest level of competition.

This year, tens of thousands of fans are expected in the stands to support their idol, who is going through one of the most difficult seasons of his career. After the championship so far, he has won only one point and is in 18th place among 22 drivers.

However, Alonso claims that he is satisfied with what he has achieved during his career.

"The hardest thing is when you're not winning and when you're not competitive. If this is the last season, it doesn't affect me. I'm at peace with myself and my career. I've achieved much more than I ever dreamed of as a boy," said Alonso.
