The fifth round of the Montenegro Open, held in Budva, brought a great fight, and chess fans in Montenegro can have reason to be happy on the eve of their day off.
In the main A tournament, Grandmaster Nikita Petrov took advantage of the opening move in a duel with International Master Andrej Ljepić from Serbia and reached first place, which he shares with International Master Sahib Singh from India, who defeated second seed Toms Kantans from Latvia.
They are followed by a group of nine players with 4 points, followed by a group of players with 3,5 points in the division from 12th to 35th place, which includes our grandmasters Nikola Đukić and Luka Drašković, who drew in today's duels.
In the ladies' competition, Aleksandra Žerebcova, who plays for our national team, is currently the leading female chess player from the Mediterranean federations.
The successful first half of the tournament was completed by Milojko Kandić, who after five rounds is the only maximum participant in the tournaments in Budva. In the fifth round, Kandić defeated Pavel Lagašin with the black pieces in a precisely controlled attack, after an effective combination.
Kandic is followed by four players with 4,5 points.
Tomorrow is a day off for the A and B tournaments, and chess activities will continue with the Mediterranean Youth Championship in Rapid and Blitz Chess.
The organizer of the Montenegro Open, which brought together 270 players from 38 countries, is the Chess Federation of Montenegro, with the support of the Municipality of Budva, the Budva Riviera Hotel Group, and all under the auspices of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, and the World Chess Federation FIDE.
