An unusual match at the US Open was played by French Fiona Ferro and Polish Iga Svyontek.
The first set went to the outsider Fero. Svyontek took a time out to go to the bathroom and returned after six minutes. It didn't help as she immediately lost her serve at the start of the second set. Then the seventh favorite came to her bench in tears, then returned to the court and broke back in the fourth game.
She won the set and then played hard in the third for - 2:1 (3:6, 7:6, 6:0).
Svyontek is the winner of last year's Roland Garros.
Ema Radukanu, an 18-year-old British woman, reached the 3rd round in her debut participation at the US Open, after beating China's Shuai Zhen 2:0 (6:2, 6:4).
And the first skeleton player Ashley Barti goes on, as she easily defeated Denmark's Klara Towson (6:1, 7:5).
The Olympic champion Belinda Benčić was better than the Italian Matina Trevizan (6:1, 6:3), and the surprise was caused by the Russian Varvara Gračeva, who for the first time defeated a player below 30th place.
In two identical sets, she won 6:4, 6:4 against the Spaniard Paula Badosa, the 24th seed.
Among the men from the upper part of the skeleton, the first player to reach the third round was the 22nd seed Reilly Opelka. He beat the young Italian Lorenzo Musetti in three sets.
Finalist of the Masters in Toronto, Opelka plays in the next round with the better player from the match Basilashvili - Maksim Kresi.
