Holger Rune continues with great releases on clay this season - the 19-year-old Danish tennis player today defeated Denis Shapovalov 3:0 (6:3, 6:1, 7:6), registered the first victory of his career in Grand Slam tournaments and qualified to the second round of Roland Garros.
Rune is the junior winner of Roland Garros, and he won the title three years ago.
Shapovalov, who recently beat Rafael Nadal at the Rome Masters, looked disinterested on court. He played a bad match, had 65 percent of the points won after the first serve (Rune had 76 percent) and as many as 53 unforced errors.
Rune broke twice in the first and second sets and easily took a 2:0 lead. The most uncertainty was seen in the third set - Rune broke in the 9th game, then served for the win, but Shapovalov fought back and equalized, so the third set went to a tie-break, in which the Danish tennis player was better.
This year, on January 17 to be exact, Holger Rune entered the top 100 on the ATP list for the first time and became the youngest tennis player after Carlos Alcaraz in that company.
At the Australian Open, he was eliminated in the first round by Kwon (3:2), played in Indian Wells and Miami, and exploded at the tournament in Munich. There he won the first title in his career (Botik van de Zandshulp handed him the match in the final), and on the way to the cup he eliminated Aleksander Zverev (6:3, 6:2) and recorded his first career victory over a tennis player from the top 10.
That triumph was followed by a jump in the ATP list, so the Dane was among the top 50 tennis players for the first time in his career. It is currently ranked 40th.
Before Roland Garros, he participated in the tournament in Lyon, where he lost to Cameron Nori in the semi-finals.
