The first holder of the ATP tournament on the clay of Gstaad, the Norwegian Kasper Rud, won the final of the second favorite, the Italian Matteo Berretini, with a reversal (4:6, 7:6, 6:2).
The Norwegian defended the trophy in Gstaad after a little more than two and a half hours of play, although Beretini played better in the first set. However, the Italian was not ready for the marathon, after he had to withdraw from the biggest tournament before the start of Wimbledon due to covid.
The Italian thus ended a streak of 12 victories, and cups at tournaments on grass in Stuttgart and London, which he surprisingly won immediately after recovering from hand surgery.
Beretini experienced his 11th consecutive defeat against players from the top 10, in total he won only seven times in 25 matches.
By defending his title, Rud grabbed his third trophy this season, his eighth overall in ATP 250 tournaments, and has only one title from a more prestigious tournament.
The tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland will be remembered as the first one where its conquerors met in the semi-finals. Rud won over 2019 champion Alberto Ramos, while Beretini won Gstaad 2018 and eliminated 2015 champion Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals.
Such a thing happened for the first time since the Masters in Toronto in 2010.
