The world number one tennis player Carlos Alcaraz arrived in Spain and joined the national team for the upcoming Davis Cup matches, but his performance at the beginning of the competition in the duel with Serbia is uncertain.
"I am very proud that, as the first tennis player in the world, I came to help the team. It is always special to play in the Davis Cup. There is a unique atmosphere there and I am looking forward to being part of the team," Alcaras said.
Alcaraz arrived in Valencia, a day before the match between Spain and Serbia at the beginning of the Davis Cup group stage.
On Sunday evening, he won the first Grand Slam title, the US Open, and became the first tennis player in the world.
"We hope he can recover as soon as possible. We don't know yet if he will be able to play on Wednesday," said Spain coach Serhi Bruggera.
Alcaraz was expected by many to miss the Davis Cup competition after he said on Monday that he "woke up dead tired" after his four-set final match against Norway's Kasper Rudd.
Before the final, the 19-year-old Spaniard played three five-set matches in New York, including a quarter-final match against Italian Yanico Siner, which lasted five hours and 15 minutes.
"We will see how he feels, we will talk to him. The sooner he can play, the better. But the way he won three matches in five sets is an incredible mental and physical effort. He is the youngest number one tennis player in the world, there are not many words for it." Brugera added.
After the duel with Serbia, Spain will play in Group B on Friday with Canada and South Korea on Sunday. The two best teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played in Malaga in November.
