The second day at the Australian Open was marked by Andy Murray, who defeated Matteo Berretini after five sets and advanced to the next round.
Murray won 6:3, 6:3, 4:6, 6:7, 7:6 and in the next round he will play with Kokinakis or Fonjini, whose match was interrupted due to rain.
This was Murray's first win over a top 20 player at a Grand Slam since 2017. Previously, six years ago, he beat the Japanese Kei Nishikori at Roland Garros.
"I'm incredibly happy and proud. I've been working to get the chance to play matches like this again. All the hard work paid off. In the end, I was just a little lucky. Mateo is a very good tennis player," Murray said after the match.
In the fifth set, Beretini had a match point, but his shot was inaccurate and the ball hit the net.
"It's hard for me to talk now. It could have been different. I had a match point," said Beretini.
Murray achieved a great victory and made a great feat. He had an operation four years ago and has been playing with a metal hook ever since. And when the draw was made for the Australian Open, it seemed the Brit was out of luck. Beretini was the absolute favorite.
In the match against the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, Murray played great, perhaps his best tennis since his return. He quickly took a 2:0 lead, reached a break once in both sets, and did not allow his rival a single chance to take away his serve. The Italian had problems with his forehand in those moments.
However, Beretini managed to come back, won the fourth set in a tie-break, and then did not use the match point in the fifth. The deciding set went to a tie-break that was played until ten, in which Murray took a 5:0 lead and achieved a great victory.
