Russian tennis player Danil Medvedev said that he would like tennis to be played only on hard surfaces.
Last night, Medvedev won the Masters in Miami for the first time in his career, and it is known that he does not do very well on clay.
"If I were to ask myself, it would be played only on hard surfaces. But, I completely understand that it would not be fair," said Medvedev and repeated that he really likes to play on hard surfaces.
In the Miami final, Medvedev defeated the Italian Janiko Sinero after two sets (7:5, 6:3) and thus reached his 18th title in tournaments on a hard surface, and the 19th overall in his career.
"The hard court is where I feel the game the best. Although I know I can play pretty well on both grass and clay, this is where my game is most fluid. I may not play my best tennis on hard courts, but I can win matches. It's big difference," said Medvedev, who is the fourth player on the ATP list as of today.
In Miami, the Russian won his fourth title in two months, after Rotterdam, Dubai and Doha. He played in five finals, but in Indian Wells two weeks ago he lost to Spaniard Carlos Alcars, which was his only loss in 25 matches.
"I don't think I've ever had such a good start to a season. I'm usually at my best at the Australian Open, where I've reached the final twice (in 2021 and 2022). This year I wasn't good enough in Melbourne, so I'm happy that I made it to turn things around," Medvedev said.
He will now have to confirm his good form on clay as well, whose season will start soon. It is a surface on which he has never celebrated.
"But I know I can play well on clay as well. I once beat Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the same tournament," Medvedev recalled of the Monte Carlo tournament in 2019 when he reached the semifinals.
"Clay is harder for me. If I don't play my best tennis, I can lose much easier," added the Russian tennis player.
