Today in Turin, Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic was presented with the trophy intended for the player who ends the year at the top of the ATP list, for the eighth time in his career.
Last night, Djokovic beat Dane Holger Rune 7:6, 6:7, 6:3 in the first round of the final Masters in Turin, securing the number one position on the ATP list at the end of the season, a record eighth time in his career.
"This is the crown of the season. Ending the year as number one in the world is the dream of every tennis player. It is one of the most difficult things that can be done in our sport, along with winning the Grand Slam," Djokovic said at the ceremony in Turin, before the start of the match. After ATP president Andrea Gaudenci handed him the cup, a very cheerful Djokovic thanked his team.
"It's a team effort, even though I'm standing here alone. This is a remarkable achievement and I'm very proud of it," Djokovic said.
Djokovic left behind Pete Sampras, who finished the year as number one six times, that is, Roger Federer, Jimmy Connors and Rafael Nadal, who managed to do it five times.
Remaining at number one, Djokovic will extend another record starting next Monday, November 20, as he begins his 400th week at the top of the ATP list. Far behind him on the all-time list is Federer with 310 weeks at the top of the ATP list.
So far this season, Djokovic has won six trophies, including three of the four most important - at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the US Open. In addition, he added titles from Cincinnati and Paris to his collection of Masters trophies, reaching a record 40.
Tomorrow, Djokovic will play against the Italian Janiko Siner, in the second round match of the Green Group at the final Masters in Turin.
