After two years, the reign of Carlos Alcaraz in Madrid has ended - today the Spanish tennis player lost to Andrej Rubljev 2:1 (4:6, 6:3, 6:2) in the quarterfinals of this Masters.
Today, for the first time since 2022, the Russian tennis player defeated one of the three best tennis players in the world.
Rublev came to the triumph after a reversal. Alkaras broke in the fifth game of the first set and took a 3:2 lead, and in the tenth game he used the third set point to take a 1:0 lead.
One break was seen in the second set as well, and the Russian tennis player reached it. At the start of that part of the game, Rubljov took a 2:0 lead, and in the third game he saved a break point and reached 3:0.
There were chances for a break on both sides in the second set, but Rublyov managed to preserve the advantage, realize the second set point and equalize.
The Russian tennis player broke at the start of the third set and took a 2:0 lead, then in the fifth game he once again took away his rival's serve, which was enough to qualify for the semi-finals.
Rublev will play against Taylor Fritz or Francisco Serundolo in the semi-finals.
