Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic will start the competition at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, with a duel against the Czech Vito Kopriva, it was decided by draw today.
Djokovic injured his knee in the Round of 16 match at Roland Garros in early June and had to withdraw from that tournament. He was immediately operated on in Paris, but his participation in Wimbledon was uncertain.
However, his name was drawn today.
If he clears the first hurdle, the seven-time Wimbledon champion will play the winner of the Jacob Fearnley-Alejandro Moro Canas match in the second round.
Djokovic's potential rival in the third round is the Argentine Tomas Martin Echeveri, in the fourth the Dane Holger Rune or the Russian Karen Hačanov, while in the eventual quarter-finals the Pole Hubert Hurkač or the Australian Alex De Minor await him.
If he reaches the semi-finals, his possible rivals are, according to the draw, the German Alexander Zverev, the Russian Andrei Rublev or the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, while he cannot meet with the Italian Janiko Siner or the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz before the final.
Djokovic won the Wimbledon title in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. Last year, he lost to Alcaraz in the final (6:1, 6:7, 1:6, 6:3, 4:6) .
When it comes to the women's part of the tournament, the best player in the world, Poland's Iga Sfiontek, will start the competition against the American Sofia Kenin. Last year's champion, the Czech Vondrous, will start her title defense with a duel against the Spanish tennis player Jesika Bouzas Maneiro.
Wimbledon starts on Monday, July 1.
