Australian tennis player Aleksey Popirin made a big surprise at the US Open - the 28th tennis player in the world defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in the third round after four sets.
Popirin won 3:1 and for the first time in his career reached the round of XNUMX of a Grand Slam.
"I finally broke through that limit. It's an incredible feeling that I did it against the best player of all time," said Popirin after the match.
Popirin took a 2:0 lead in the sets, and then Djokovic managed to reduce it. However, in the fourth set, Popirin made two breaks, enough to advance to the next round.
"This was not perhaps my highest level because I played some matches where I felt better than today. I positioned myself well tactically and still played one of the best matches. The level was high, but... There were matches in which I scored 50 wieners and I have 50 unforced gersaks. It's just like that," explained Popirin.
The Australian tennis player played for the first time at the "Artur Eš" stadium.
"It was great. I was at 'Artur Eš' for the first time. I wanted to feel and see how the stadium looks and how big it is. The crowd was great, they got involved in the match. When I was hitting shots, it was great to feel the crowd by his side," concluded Popirin.
Popirin will play against Tijafo in the next round.
