The second semi-finalist of the US Open is Francis Tijafo - the American placed among the top four tennis players at the last Grand Slam after Girgor Dimitrov handed him the match.
Dimitrov surrendered the match when Tijafo was leading 6:3, 6:7, 6:3, 4:1.
Tijafo reached the semi-finals of the US Open for the second time in the last three years. The American tennis player lost to Carlos Alkaras in the semifinals of the tournament in New York two years ago.
Tiafo made two breaks in the first set and took a 1:0 lead, and he opened the second set well, since he had a 4:1 advantage.
From that moment Dimitrov played better, equalized (4:4), and then won in the tie-break and reached 1:1 in sets.
The third set was similar to the first - Tijafo made two breaks and took a 2:1 lead. But, in the third set, Dimitrov injured his back, so he surrendered the match in the fourth set.
"This is not the way I wanted to go, but I am happy. Another semi final here, unbelievable. It was a high level match. You will see me again, against another American, Friday will be a good day", said Tijafo after the match.
Tiafoe will play against Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals. This means that for the first time since 2009, an American tennis player will be in the Grand Slam final. In 2009, Andy Roddick lost to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final.
Also, for the first time since 2005, two Americans will play in the semifinals of the US Open. Andre Agassi and Robi Đinepri met in the 2005 semi-finals.
