Janik Siner beat Novak Djokovic in the Masters final in Shanghai - 7:6, 6:3, preventing the most decorated tennis player of all time from entering the 100 club.
So far, only Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer have won at least 100 ATP titles.
"Congratulations to Janika. He was just too good today, too strong. You have an incredible season, so his team also deserves congratulations... I see a couple of familiar faces in the audience," laughed Djokovic, observing Roger Federer, Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Ferrer in the audience.
"It's a great team, well done guys! And for Siner I'm happy because he deserves success. I'm glad to see you, Roger. I'm not used to you sitting in the stands. I wish you were on the field playing with us. It was probably the first the first time I played in front of Roger and I felt extra pressure. Thank you for coming, thank you Carlos and Juan, too," concluded Djokovic.
And what kind of shape Siner is in, is shown by the fact that he was the first ever to beat Djokovic in two matches in a row without allowing a break chance.
"It's hard to reveal the secret. Djokovic has no weaknesses in his game, and that's why we have to make the most of the few opportunities he allows. But there aren't many in the match and you have to be focused. Also, we have to try to believe in every moment. That's all. He's a legend of our sport. It's very difficult to play against him and that's why I'm happier for the victory," said Siner.
