Last year, the Italian tennis team won the Davis Cup for the first time in 47 years - the Azzurri beat Australia in the final and Serbia in the semi-final.
Janik Siner excelled then, who in those days was taking off to heavenly heights and continued his great form in 2024, which he opened with a title at the Australian Open, and rounded it off with tonight's triumph in the final of the Davis Cup - Siner defeated the Dutch Griekspor in Malaga 2:0 (7:6, 6:2), and Italy defended the Davis Cup trophy.
Before Siner, victory was brought to the Italians by Beretini, who defeated Van de Zandschlupp (2:0).
Only the first set was tense tonight, and Siner saved two break points in the third game. Those were the only break opportunities in the first set for a tennis player - then it was a tie-break in which Siner won 7:2 and took the lead in sets.
In the second set, Siner was the first to break and take a 2:1 lead. But, in the next game, Grikspor reacted, regained the break and equalized (2:2). It seemed then that a fight like the one in the first set would follow, but what followed was the furious play of Siner.
The first tennis player on the ATP list tied four games, so the Davis Cup trophy remained in the possession of the Italian.
Siner has had an incredible year - the Italian won the Australian Open and the US Open, the final Masters in Turin, and for the first time reached the first place on the ATP list. And the year was also marked by the doping scandal, at the center of which was Siner.
