Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the Australian Open today, after defeating Portuguese player Jaime Fario 6:1, 6:7 (4), 6:3, 6:2.
Djokovic became the tennis player with the most Grand Slam appearances (430), followed by Roger Federer (429) and Serena Williams (423).
The match between Djokovic and Fario, ranked seventh and 125th in the world, lasted three hours.
Djokovic needed two breaks to win the first set. The Serbian tennis player was the first to break in the second set and took a 2-1 lead, but then Faria won four consecutive games and took a 2-5 lead.
The Serbian tennis player managed to equalize (5:5), but also to save one set point on his serve in the 12th game. The set was decided in a tie-break, which ultimately went to the Portuguese with a score of 4:7.
A break in the sixth game was enough for Djokovic to take a 2-1 lead in sets, and then in the fourth set he broke his rival's serve twice to advance to the next stage.
The match was interrupted by rain at the beginning of the third set, and then the roof of Rod Laver Arena was closed.
Djokovic, a ten-time Australian Open champion, will next play Czech Tomas Mahach, ranked 25th in the world, who defeated American Riley Opelka (170th on the ATP list) 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-4.
The third-ranked tennis player in the world, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, also reached the third round, defeating Japanese player Yoshihito Nishioka (21th on the ATP list) 65:6, 0:6, 1:6 in an hour and 4 minutes.
In the next round, Alcaraz will play against the 33rd ranked player in the world, Portuguese Nuno Borges, who defeated the local player Jordan Thompson (27th in the world) 6:3, 6:2, 6:4.
