Two wins in four sets, and then when the toughest match so far was expected, Novak Djokovic once again showed how powerful he is even at 37 years old.
The legendary tennis player is in the round of 22 of the Australian Open - Djokovic defeated Tomas Mahach from the Czech Republic 3:0 (6:1, 6:4, 6:4) in three sets, after two hours and XNUMX minutes.
"The result is a bit surprising for me, because I won three sets in a row, and somehow I was just physically fighting with myself, so this is my best match so far in the tournament," Djokovic said.
Unlike their last duel, almost eight months ago in Geneva, when the Czech tennis player won, this time Djokovic did not even allow Mahach to try to spread his wings, and despite some stomach problems, he controlled things from start to finish at the "Rod Laver Arena".
The first set did not bring the slightest drama, the second started with a break from Mahač, but Novak immediately responded with two breaks of his own to reach 3:2 and bring the set to an end.
In the final set, Djokovic broke his rival's serve at the start, and Mahač didn't have many chances to get back into the match either. After all, the Serbian tennis player allowed only three break chances to his Czech opponent throughout the match.
In the end, he joked about the physical problems he had during the match...
"I'm not 19 anymore, so that's expected," Djokovic pointed out.
Everything the world has seen throughout Djokovic's years of dominance was also shown in this match - lots of great points, confidence when it mattered most, and this time, an excellent serve, as the master from Serbia hit nine aces, each one seemingly arriving when he needed it most.
After the match, Djokovic also sent a message of support to student Sonja Ponjavić, who was injured yesterday during a protest in Belgrade after a car driver deliberately ran into her.
In the next round, Djokovic will face another Czech player - Jiri Lehečka, who also made it to the top 16 without much trouble, with a victory over Benjamin Bonzi (6:2, 6:3, 6:3).
