A spectacle was expected, but there wasn't even a second of it, even though the match lasted 20 minutes.
World number one Janik Siner surrendered the Cincinnati Masters final to second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz on the ATP list, after the Spaniard won the first five games.
The statistics show how bad the Italian felt - he lost most of his points due to his own mistakes (10:1 in unforced errors), the Spaniard led 5:0 even though he had two fewer winners (2:4).
The sun was mercilessly scorching in Cincinnati, whether that is the reason for Siner's discomfort will only be known soon, or whether his performance at the US Open, which begins on Sunday, where the Italian is defending his title, may be in question.
Probably not, because Siner probably surrendered so as not to jeopardize his performance at the last Grand Slam of the season.
In his post-match speech, the Wimbledon champion partly explained what was behind his decision to surrender the match. He apologized to the fans...
- I usually start with the opponent, but today I have to start with you. I am very, very sorry to have disappointed you. I have not been feeling well since yesterday. I thought I would recover during the night, but the condition has worsened - said the Italian.
- I tried to get out on the field and at least play a short match, but I couldn't take it anymore. I'm really sorry for all of you. I know some of you may have had to take the day off or postpone your duties on Monday, and that's why it's even harder for me - Siner addressed the audience.
He also congratulated Alcaraz.
- Of course, congratulations Carlos. Another trophy. Not the way you wanted to win, but it's incredible what a season you're having. You and your whole team are doing a fantastic job. Keep it up. I wish you all the best at the US Open and the rest of the season - said the Italian.
After surrendering, Alkaras immediately approached his rival, with whom he had already played two Grand Slam finals this year, and offered him words of support.
He wrote on the camera with a marker:
"I'm sorry, Janik."
- I know and understand how you feel right now. As I have said many times, you are truly a champion. I am sure that you will come out of this situation even better and stronger. You always do. That is what true champions do - and you really are. I am sorry and I want you to come back even stronger - Alcaras said at the end.
