Novak Djokovic has reached the semifinals of Grand Slams four times this season, but he has never managed to reach the final - the Serbian tennis player was also stopped in the semifinals of the US Open last night, and was bettered by Carlos Alcaraz, who celebrated 3:0.
Djokovic was defeated by Jannik Siner in the semifinals of Roland Garros and Wimbledon, last night at the US Open by Alcaraz, while in the semifinals of the Australian Open he had to give up the match to Alexander Zverev.
And after last night's defeat to Alcaraz, he pointed out that he missed his biggest chance for the final at Roland Garros.
"Roland Garros, I would say. I was injured at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, here I lacked the strength to keep up with Alcaraz. I couldn't handle his pace and rhythm, he was at a very high level from the first point," said Djokovic after last night's match.
The Serbian tennis player also reflected on the duel with Alcaraz.
"It's frustrating on the court when you can't physically handle it, but that comes with age, it's expected in a way. I still enjoy competing. I've had incredible support from the crowd, I'm grateful for that. That's one of the biggest reasons why I keep playing, I've gotten a lot of love in the past years. The second set was fun, the crowd got involved, but Carlos was better in key moments. It's never fun to lose, but if I have to lose, it's to those two. They're better at the moment. I didn't have any injuries that would prevent me from playing, but the fitness level wasn't enough for Carlos," explained Djokovic.
Novak is 38 years old, he has reached four Grand Slam semifinals this season.
"I lost three out of four semifinals to Siner and Alkaras. They are simply too good. I ran out of gas after the second set, I didn't have the strength to match him anymore, and he kept going. I felt the same way with Janika, it's hard for me to play with them in three sets, especially in the late stages of a slam," said Djokovic, adding:
"I'm happy with the level of play, but the physicality... As I said after the quarterfinals, I did my best to get my body in order so that I could play as much as I should, but it didn't work. At this stage of my career, I can't control it. It will be very difficult for me to overcome that obstacle of Siner and Alcaraz at the slams, there are more chances to win two, but I won't give up - I will continue to fight, although it will be a very difficult task."
By the end of the season, Djokovic will definitely play in one tournament.
"I plan to play in Athens, that's for sure. Besides, the question is where I'll play and what I'll do. I still want to play Grand Slams, let's see what happens, they are the pillar of our sport," said Djokovic.
