Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has announced that he will not play at the Shanghai Masters, which begins today, due to injury problems.
"I have physical problems and after talking with my team, we believe the best decision is for me to rest and recover," the world number one wrote on Instagram.
Alcarras twisted his left foot during a serve in the first round of the Tokyo tournament against Argentine Sebastian Baez. Although he continued the match after a member of the medical team bandaged his ankle, the injury remained present during the final, in which he won against American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday.
At just 22 years old, Alcaras won his eighth trophy of the season and 24th overall in his career in Tokyo, including six Grand Slams.
Despite missing the Shanghai Masters, Alcaraz will remain number one in the ATP rankings. His closest competitor, Italian Jannick Siner, is the reigning champion and cannot gain any new points, while Alcaraz, last year's quarterfinalist, will lose only 180 points.
