Monaco tennis player Valentin Vaschereau won the Shanghai Masters title today, after defeating his cousin, the world's 54th ranked Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, after three sets - 4:6, 6:3, 6:3.
Vashero won his first Masters Series title today.
"What just happened is unreal, I have no idea what's happening right now. I'm not even dreaming, this is crazy. I'm happy with the game in the last two weeks. I want to thank everyone who has helped me since the beginning of my career," said Vashero.
Before the Shanghai Masters, he had only one victory in ATP tournaments. In Shanghai, he defeated Laszlo Đere, Aleksander Bublik, Tomas Mahač, Talon Grikspoor, Holger Rune and Novak Đoković.
"One of us had to lose, but I think there are two winners today. One family that won and I think this story is unreal for tennis," added Vashero.
Vaschereau is the first tennis player from Monaco to win the title and the third qualifier to win a trophy at the Masters.
He will climb to 40th place on the ATP list on Monday, which will be his best ranking, and by winning the final he earned $1.124.380. Before the Shanghai Masters, he earned $594.077 during his career.
Rindenkreš will climb to 28th place on the ATP list, which will be his best ranking.
"Valenten, you gave it your all and I'm so happy for you. Two cousins are stronger than one," said Rinderknesh.
