Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic will play in the first round of the Australian Open against Spaniard Pedro Martinez, it was decided today by the draw in Melbourne.
The winner of a record 10 Australian Open titles is in the same section of the draw as two-time consecutive champion Italian Jannick Sinero, with whom he could play in the semifinals.
Djokovic's potential opponent in the second round could be Frenchman Terence Atman, in the third round he could play against Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut or American Brandon Nakashima, and in the fourth round his possible opponents are Czech Jakub Menšík and Pole Hubert Hurkacz.
In the quarterfinals, Djokovic could face American Taylor Fritz and Italian Lorenzo Musetti, while in the semifinals, possible opponents include Siner, American Ben Shelton and Norwegian Kasper Ruud. On the other side of the draw are Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev from Germany, with whom Djokovic will not be able to play until the final.
Siner will begin his title defense against Frenchman Hugo Gaston, and top seed Alcaraz will play against Australian Adam Walton in the opening round.
Zverev will play against Canadian Gabriel Diallo, Italian Matteo Berrettini will play against domestic player Alex de Minor, and Russian Daniil Medvedev will play against Dutchman Jesper de Jong.
American Ben Shelton will play against Frenchman Ugo Ember, and Marin Čilić from Croatia will play against Daniel Altmaier from Germany.
In the women's tennis competition, defending champion American Madison Keys will play against Ukrainian Oleksandra Oliynikova.
Top seed Arina Sabalenka of Belarus will play against France's Tjancoe Rakotomanga, Russian Mira Andreeva will play against Dona Vekić of Croatia, and American Jessica Pegula will play against Russia's Anastasia Zakharova.
Two-time champion Naomi Osaka from Japan will play against Antonija Ružičić from Croatia, Kazakh tennis player Elena Rybakina will play against Kaja Juvan from Slovenia, and Polish player Iga Swiontek will play against a qualifier.
The Australian Open will be played from January 18th to February 1st.
