Another record is in the collection of Novak Djokovic, who today became the first tennis player with 400 victories in Grand Slam tournaments.
The Serbian tennis player defeated Botik van de Zandslupp 3:0 (6:3, 6:4, 7:6) in the third round and advanced to the round of 16 of the Australian Open for the 18th time in his career, and the 70th time at all Grand Slams.
Novak opened the Melbourne tournament with a win over Pedro Martinez, his 100th in Australia, and today he reached 102nd, tying Roger Federer for first place. And if he advances to the quarterfinals, he will be the player with the most wins at the Australian Open.
"The body is in good shape, this is a good start to the tournament. I learned a lesson here last year. I still try to play at a high level and compete with the younger players, Janik Siner and Carlos Alcaraz are great guys, just on a different level than us. This court has given me a lot, so I'm grateful," said Djokovic after the duel.
Novak took an express lead in the sets, in the second he had 3:0 and two breaks to spare, and then Van de Zandschlup played much better after the medical timeout.
"I think he had good treatment, the doctor did a good job. Since then he started serving well and playing much better. I relaxed a little at 2:0, but somehow I managed to get out of difficult situations. This is a fast sport and one move changes everything," said Djokovic.
Djokovic also had a problem in the third set, when he stepped awkwardly and fell, so he had to call a physiotherapist.
"I called the physio right away, because what happened happened, but I had a good fall. There was no major damage."
Djokovic also spoke about what young tennis players ask him. Recently, Iva Jović boasted that she received some advice from Novak.
"I talked to Iva for a long time, she has achieved very good results. I shared a few tips, but I can't say what specifically. It's a privilege when you can share your experiences with young people. I feel an emotional connection with them. Iva is a future Grand Slam champion. I'm rooting for her," Djokovic said.
He also talked about what he could change, if he could travel through time.
"So much stress, tense moments... When I was younger, I dreamed of these moments, but it's also important what kind of environment you're in, that you're surrounded by people you trust, that they have similar characters... Faith is also important, good energy and people," concluded Djokovic.
