The champion has withdrawn - Carlos Alcaraz will not defend his title at Roland Garros this year.
The news came as a shock, the Spaniard announced it on social media and said that in addition to the Grand Slam tournament in Paris, he would not play in the Masters in Rome before that.
The world's second-ranked tennis player has retired due to a wrist injury.
The injury was known about before, but the problem seems to be much bigger than initially thought when the young ace withdrew from the tournament in Barcelona.
"My medical team and I, after detailed analysis, have made the most sensible decision - not to play in Rome and at Roland Garros. This is a difficult moment for me, but I am sure that I will emerge from it even stronger," Carlitos wrote.
Alcaras has been winning the Roland Garros title for the past two years.
First in five sets against Alexander Zverev, and then in an epic clash with Janik Siner - in one of the best matches in tennis history - when he was defeated before making a major comeback to win a new title.
Carlitos started 2026 on the right foot, winning the Australian Open for the first time in his career with a triumph over Novak Djokovic.
He also won the tournament in Doha, and later lost to Siner in the final of Monte Carlo. He participated in a total of six tournaments this year, winning two...
It was believed that he was coming to Paris as the favorite to win his eighth Grand Slam title, but now others see a great chance - first and foremost Siner, and perhaps Djokovic, who has been skipping tournaments in order to be ready for Roland Garros.
