The world's ninth-ranked Russian tennis player, Daniil Medvedev, advanced to the semifinals of the Rome Masters after defeating Spaniard Martin Landaluse 1:6, 6:4, 7:5 last night after three sets.
He defeated the 94th ranked player on the ATP list after two hours and 24 minutes.
Landaluse dominated the first set, taking a 5:0 lead and quickly winning that portion of the game.
In the second, Medvedev woke up. The Russian made a break and led 3:1, but Landaluse immediately broke his rival's serve in the next set and reduced the score to 3:2.
Medvedev broke again in the eighth game (5:3), but even then he was unable to maintain that advantage, as Landaluse reacted again and returned to the match (5:4). However, in the very next game the Spaniard failed to hold his serve, so the Russian used a set point to equalize.
The third set began with a break for Landaluse, who led 3:1. Medvedev then managed to turn the game around (4:3), and then in the 12th game he used the fourth match point and advanced to the semifinals.
Medvedev will play against the world number one, Italian Jannick Siner, in the semifinals.
