History in Rome - Italian tennis player, Janik Siner, defeated Norwegian tennis player Kasper Ruud 2:0 (6:4, 6:4), winning the Masters in the Italian capital and completing the "Golden Masters".
There is no more Masters where Siner did not celebrate, all that was missing was a trophy from the Italian capital, and today the collection is complete.
The Italian won his sixth Masters tournament in a row, having previously won in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and at the end of last season in Paris. He did not lose a set in Indian Wells, Miami, and Paris. And he became the first tennis player since Rafael Nadal to win all three clay-court tournaments (Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome) in a single season. Nadal achieved this feat in 2010.
The world's number one tennis player has never been defeated in the final of a 1.000-series tournament, and has a total of 10 Masters titles in his career.
"Congratulations to Casper and his team, it's great to see him playing tennis at this level. The most important tournament is yet to come, so I wish you a good result at Roland Garros. Thank you to my team for everything they have done for me," said Siner.
Siner reached his 34th consecutive Masters victory today. In the quarterfinals, when he defeated Andrei Rublev, he broke the record set by Novak Djokovic, who tied 31 triumphs in 1.000-series tournaments in 2011.
The first four games of the match brought one break each, and then in the ninth game Siner once again broke his rival's serve and won the first set.
The Italian achieved another break at the start of the second set. He took a 2-0 lead, missed another opportunity to break his opponent's serve, saved a break point in the eighth game and made history.
Siner today became the first Italian to win the tournament in Rome since Adriano Panata, who did it in 1976.
"It's hard to describe what Janik has been doing this season. It takes time to understand how well you play tennis. It was a pleasure to play against you today. I'm glad you completed the 'Golden Masters' in front of your fans. I know you did it for yourself, your team, your fans and your country. It's fantastic. I would like to thank my team. It's been an interesting year for me, especially off the court, my fiancée and I have become parents. In the future, I will try to win a tournament for my daughter," said Rud.
