After almost four years off the court, legendary American tennis player Serena Williams, along with her doubles partner Canadian Victoria Mboka, advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament in Queens, London, today, after a first-round victory over the American-New Zealand pair Nicole Melihar-Martinez and Erin Rutliff after two sets, 7:6, 6:2.
Williams' first WTA Tour match since September 3, 2022, lasted an hour and 32 minutes.
The former world number one and Mboko broke the American-New Zealand pair three times, while Melihar-Martinez and Rutliff won one break.
"It was so much fun. I had such a great time playing with Victoria. She really held the team together and played strong in the important points. I could really rely on her. We had never played together, but playing with her was so natural," the 44-year-old Williams said in an on-court interview.
Mboko said she was honored to play alongside Serena, who has won a total of 39 Grand Slam singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles.
"I had a lot of fun, if nothing else. We really did it there. I'm very happy to be playing next to you. We want to take even more," said the 19-year-old Canadian.
Williams and Mboko will play against the Canadian-German pair of Leila Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Queens.
