Roland Garros champion and former US Open finalist, German Alexander Zverev, won his second match in five sets in the second round of the New York Grand Slam.
Zverev defeated Frenchman Quentin Halis early this morning, our time, after almost five hours of fighting - 6:4, 4:6, 7:6, 6:7, 6:3.
He did the same two days ago, against Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
At the end of the match, the German took off his shirt and raised his arms high in the sky - as a sign of relief, although it is questionable whether such a difficult start bodes well for the rest of the tournament.
In any case, Zverev believes that he is slowly breaking the ice - and that easier, not harder, matches are coming.
He has a good chance, he is definitely competing to win the second Grand Slam tournament of his career, after Janik Siner's withdrawal, Novak Djokovic's elimination, and Carlos Alcaraz's five-month break before the start of the tournament.
His rival in the round of 32 is Chilean Tabilo.
And during the night, a big surprise happened, the anonymous Australian, 123rd on the ATP list, Dane Sweeney, defeated the 14th player in the world, Lorenzo Musetti, 3:6, 6:1, 6:2, 6:2.
Sweeney, ranked 123rd in the world, defeated the Italian player and last year's US Open quarterfinalist in two hours and 36 minutes.
Musetti won the first set thanks to a break, but then stopped completely. The "blocked" Musetti won only five games by the end of the match.
A promising outcome for another Italian, Luciano Darderi, 22nd on the ATP list, who will now face Sweeney instead of his compatriot Musetti.
