Alexander Zverev is the US Open champion - the German tennis player defeated Ben Shelton 3:1 (6:3, 7:6, 5:7, 6:2) in the final last night and won the second Grand Slam title of his career.
Zverev celebrated at Roland Garros in May, lost to Jannik Siner in the Wimbledon final, and then crowned a great year last night in New York.
Zverev also took advantage of the fact that Alcaraz was absent from Paris and London due to injury, Siner missed the US Open. That's why reporters were curious after the match last night whether the German tennis player believes he is currently the best in the world.
"I don't know how to answer that. You have to take everything into account. When we know that Janik Siner is currently injured and Carlos Alcaraz has just returned to the court, I probably am at this point. But if they were both healthy and both at the top of their game, maybe not. Four or five months ago, when they were both healthy, I wasn't. I was constantly losing to Janik," Zverev said after the match.
An interesting situation was seen in New York, Zverev did not know that he had won the last point of the match, he was preparing to serve.
"I was too focused on the final. I didn't hear anything. It was like I was in a tunnel. And when the crowd started making noise, it was impossible to hear the referee. I didn't hear him say the score and that I won. I thought I was leading 5:1, not that I won 6:2," Zverev explained.
He praised Shelton.
"Ben is very talented, but also very hardworking. I often see him at tournaments working with his father before and after matches on various elements to improve them. He has never played his backhand as well against me as he does now. He always had a great serve, a great forehand, but before if you played him three or four balls on his backhand, he would make a mistake. That is no longer the case," concluded Zverev.
