Montenegrin volleyball players played an almost perfect match and achieved a great victory, the first in the new edition of the European League! With a confident game and control of the events on the court in Schwechat, they defeated the host of the first tournament of the competition, Austria, 3:1 (25:19, 20:25, 25:18, 25:20).
Our team showed in the first set that it was mentally prepared going into the match, as it found an answer to everything Austria did well, and then took the lead on a perfect serve from Pavićević. Five consecutive serves from our national team's corrector and three aces rounded off Montenegro's 6:0 series and a 25:19 lead.
The uncertain end of the first set did not disturb the host, who gained a three-point advantage early on, so Cimbaljević and his teammates tried to catch up with their rivals until the very end. They managed to get to -2, at 18:16, but no more than that, thanks to the tactical changes made by coach Jevtić. Austria won points in mini-series and tied the match at 25:20.
A slightly weaker second set did not shake our guys. They showed that they believed in victory by entering the third set perfectly, in which they served excellently and forced their rivals to make mistakes. Cimbaljević was especially confident, on whose serve we led 6:1, with three aces from the receiver of Budva's serve, and that was the basis for a new lead. Along with him, Zvicer and Ćinćur made significant contributions, Austria gave away enough points with desperate attacks and weak serves, so Montenegro reached 2:1 with 25:18.
The combination of the best scorers Cimbaljević – Pavićević also had the upper hand in what turned out to be the last set. After about twenty points of even play, Montenegro made a 3:0 run and took a 15:12 lead, and maintained the advantage until the end. With a safe serve, they prevented Austria from having any variety of attacks, the coaching staff made the right moves, both with substitutions and timely challenges, and the best Austrian player Paul Buheger was stopped by the young Vukota Čelebić with a block and with his eighth point led Montenegro to victory – 25:20 was the score in the fourth set.
Along with Čelebić's eight points, the most important players in the first win in this season's Europa League were Vukašin Cimbaljević with 20 points and Milutin Pavićević with 18. Ivan Zvicer scored seven, Matija Ćinćur six points, and Đorđe Jovović and Rastko Milenković contributed with two points and one point, respectively.
Montenegro's next match is on Friday, June 12, when they will play Portugal in Porto, and a day later they will play against the Latvian national team.
