Pro Reko reacted quickly after Ratko Rudić's decision to end his career and appointed a Spaniard as the new coach - the bench of the Italian great was reserved for Gabriel Hernandez.
Hernandez was the "red fury" coach until 2016, and Reko will take over at the beginning of preparations for the 2020/21 season.
"I am inspired by the fact that I arrive at the club after a great like Ratko Rudić. Reko is a challenge for me, but a challenge I look forward to. This is a great chance for me," said Hernandez.
He is the fifth foreign coach in the history of the club from Liguria, for which the Montenegrin representative Aleksandar Ivović plays.
Before Hernandez, Reko was managed by Hungarian Imre Sikora (from 1980 to 1984), Serbian legends Igor Milanović (season 2014/15) and Vladimir Vujasinović (2016-18), and Rudić for the last season and a half.
"I want every player in my team to feel that they are important, because that's the only way to create team spirit. A break due to the coronavirus? I don't believe it will be a problem. I'm sure that the players will come to the club after well-prepared preparations with the national teams, that they will to be in good shape. Water polo is a hard sport and it's clear that if you don't train properly, then you can't even play," said the 45-year-old expert.
Australia coach Elvis Fatović, former Posilipo coach Karlo Silipo and Alberto Anđelini, who leads Savona, were also in the running for Rudić's successor.
