The chair of the president of the Water Polo Association of Montenegro has been formally vacant since December 17 last year, when Dejan Bajić's term expired. It was clear that Bajić would not remain in that position as early as this summer - since then, I guess, there was enough time and space to find his successor. The question of who could take over the head of the VPSCG, however, is still in the dark.
The VPSCG statute is clear in cases where the leadership is elected...
"The election of the new president of VPSCG and the Board of Directors of VPSCG will take place within 30 days. In the meantime, the President of the Assembly takes over the responsibilities of the President of the Board of Directors of VPSCG until the election of a new President of the Board of Directors. The deadline for convening the Assembly session is at least 15 days before the set date for holding it," the Statute reads.
Therefore, the Assembly did not respect that, the deadline was missed by twenty days. However, there were enough reasons for that, claims its president Đuro Marić.
- First, due to personal reasons, I was prevented from convening the Assembly, then came the holidays, and now the preparations for the qualification tournament for the Olympic Games, which is a priority above priorities. After the tournament in Rotterdam (from February 14 to 21), the Assembly will be held. Everything according to the Statute - said Marić for "Vijesti".
In water polo circles, it is Marić who is mentioned as a potential candidate for the president of VPSCG. However, officially at the moment there is only one candidate - Mirko Vičević.
The legendary water polo player and team manager of Qatar submitted his candidacy on December 3, two weeks before Bajić's term expired. So far, he has not received an opponent, although it is hard to believe that he will stay that way.
- The Assembly was supposed to be convened on January 15, but we see that it was not. Why? It is being delayed, because I am the only candidate, time is being bought and the law is being broken in order to find another candidate or to influence the other delegates - says Vičević.
He claims to have support.
- I made the decision to run after talking with the representatives of the clubs, after I felt that I had their support. If they had their own candidate in the Alliance by now, there would not have been such a long wait - pointed out Vičević.
This summer, by the way, it seemed certain that the former coach of our national team, Petar Porobić, would become the new president, but in the end, nothing came of it. Towards the end of 2020, Ivan Noveljić, executive director of Elektroprivreda Crne Gore, long-term general sponsor of VPSCG, appeared as a candidate. That possibility no longer exists either...
February is the month that gives answers to many questions in Montenegrin water polo, but without a doubt the most important thing is whether the "sharks" will qualify for the Olympic Games.
