With three victories in the group, the junior (U18) water polo national team qualified directly for the quarter-finals of the World Championship in Belgrade. Our selection reached its third triumph in the derby with Spain, which it won convincingly - it was 11:8 for the team led by Vido Lompar.
Before today's triumph, Montenegro justified its role as the favorite in the duels with Canada (23:3) and South Africa (20:6), so it awaits its rivals for the quarterfinals on Wednesday with a lot of optimism.
"This is a great victory, against one of the main favorites for the throne. We played very well, the boys deserved this after everything they showed all summer. By reaching the quarter-finals, the first goal was fulfilled, but we must not stop there," Lompar said. .
Montenegro took a 2:0 lead, turned the "fury" to 3:2, and a little more than two minutes before the end of the second quarter had a two-goal lead - 5:3.
Spain went to the break with plus one (5:4), to be followed by a great game from Montenegro. A 4:0 run was made for a 10:6 lead, which settled the question of the winner.
The hero of the victory was Neđo Baštrica with five goals, two were scored by Danilo Stupar, and one each by Balša Vučković, Pavle Krivokapić, Miloš Vukšić and Lazar Vukićević.
Andrija Bjelica stood out in goal with nine saves.
"Preparations for the quarterfinals will begin immediately. We want to achieve another great result in Montenegrin water polo," said Lompar.
