It simply couldn't have been better and more beautiful - it was a dream start for the Montenegrin water polo players at the World Championship in Singapore.

Dejan Savić's team defeated Greece 10:9 in the first round of the World Cup after a great fight - in a group that also includes Croatia and outsider China, such triumphs can bring a lot...

But, in the end, they don't have to mean anything. So there is neither time for euphoria nor reason for it, but Montenegro showed its teeth to the favorite in the opening match and deservedly knocked him down on the wings of Đuro Radović, Filip Gardašević and goalkeeper Petar Tešanović.

The first was great in the opening two quarters, the second played a very important role in the remainder, while Tešanović was and remains a guarantee in goal for our national team.

The experienced goalie prevented the tie midway through the last quarter when he blocked a shot by Kakarissa, and entering the final minute he saved a great chance by Kalogeropoulos with the score at 10:9. It turned out that he definitely prevented Helen from getting back into the game.

- I congratulate the team on an exceptional fight and victory. We led from the beginning, kept the advantage and respected the agreement we had. The defense also functioned well. Of course, there were mistakes, but for the start of the competition, it was a good game and a good result - said Gardašević, one of the debutants at the biggest competitions.

A fierce fight was seen and the obvious great desire of our water polo players to show themselves under the command of Savić, who is leading them for the first time in a major competition. Quality, calmness and concentration at both ends of the pool with very few mistakes - all of that gave results, so the Greeks never led - there were only three draws...

- The opponent was more than strong, but I am very satisfied with how the team reacted in all situations. We gave our maximum in all positions and that contributed to the team's great victory - said Gardašević.

Đuro Radović and Gardašević were triple scorers, Savo Ćetković, Jovan Vujović, Balša Vučković and Vasilije Radović also scored, who scored the last goal for our team - for 10:8 with three minutes and 45 seconds left.

Montenegro's next rival is Croatia (Monday at 11.35:25 am) - the winner of that match will secure first place in the group and a direct place in the quarterfinals. The Croats easily justified their role as favorites against the Chinese in the opening match - 6:XNUMX.

Savić: This must be forgotten

Our water polo coach Dejan Savić was not beaming with happiness after the big victory - he is aware that this is just the beginning and that the road to the quarterfinals, and then to the fight for a medal, is long.

- It was uncertain and extremely difficult. We expected to have a large number of suspensions, because the Greeks have a center pair that is among the best in the world. We maintained and ultimately saved the result, that has not been our virtue so far - said Savić.

There are reasons for satisfaction...

- We can be satisfied with some things, but all this must be forgotten and we need to turn to Croatia - Savić emphasized.
