Celebrated water polo player Filip Filipović announced that he has ended his playing career.
Filipović (39) made this decision after the Los Angeles Athletic Club, for which he plays, won the United States (USA) championship title, defeating the Olympic Club 16:15 in the final, after better execution of the penalty kicks.
The Serbian water polo player was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match, after scoring four goals in the regular season and making the decisive five-pointer in the penalty shootout.
"You won't see me in the pool anymore, yeah. That's it. I made up my mind. I didn't want to announce anything, because whenever I announced something, something would happen. Like I said, I got the signal and that's it. Last shot, last goal for the club," Filipović said, as reported by Arena Sport.
Filipović has won a total of 35 medals at major competitions with the Serbian national team. These awards include gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2021 Tokyo Olympics, world championship titles in 2009 and 2015, and gold at the 2003, 2006, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 European Championships.
In his club career, he played for, among others, Partizan, Radnički Kragujevac, Novi Beograd, Olympiacos, Szolnok and Pro Reko, with whom he won three Champions League titles.
"Probably this feeling I have now, the energy. I don't miss the goals, the titles. Because I won everything. But these friendships, I will miss that. Now I will go on a different path. It will be water polo, but it is different from playing in the pool," said Filipović.
