NATO will open its office in Moldova in the fall, in order to support the reorganization of that country's army, Romanian Defense Minister Mircea Duša announced today.
Experts from several countries, including Romania, will be in the office, and the plan is to help in the reconstruction and preparation of the integration of the Moldovan army, in accordance with NATO regulations, said the Romanian minister after the meeting with his Moldovan colleague Anatoly Salaur.
In September of last year, NATO decided to strengthen its presence in Moldova, within the framework of the support program for NATO partner countries.
Moladavia, which has about 3,5 million inhabitants, is, according to international organizations, the poorest country in the world.
In the self-proclaimed republic of Transnistria in the east of Moldova, which the international community has never recognized, Russia keeps several thousand of its soldiers.
