A Russian ballistic missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, overnight killed one person and wounded three, local authorities announced today, the Kiev Independent newspaper reports.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that the victim's body was found on the street near the epicenter of the explosion in Kyiv's Darnytsia district and that identification of the person was underway.
Two of the wounded in the Darnytskyi district, located on the southeastern edge of the Ukrainian capital, were hospitalized, Klitschko said.
The Kyiv Independent reports that the Ukrainian State Emergency Service announced that the attack affected the Kiev districts of Darnytskyi, Obolonskyi and Solomyanskyi.
The fire broke out in a non-residential building, and another building was severely damaged, with three nearby parked cars also catching fire, the State Emergency Service said. It added that the fire has been extinguished.
Another fire broke out at a furniture store and a warehouse, and a five-story office building was "partially destroyed" on several floors, the State Emergency Service added. The fire was extinguished at these locations as well, the statement said.
The explosions occurred in Kiev at around five o'clock local time (four o'clock Central European time), a journalist for the Kiev Independent reported from the field.
Emergency services across the city are responding, Klitschko said.
Earlier, explosions were heard in Kiev at around 2.12:XNUMX a.m., a journalist for the Kiev Independent reported.
Reuters reported earlier that at least three people were injured and several fires broke out in Kiev early this morning after a Russian missile attack.
All of Ukraine was placed on a four-hour air alert Central European Time after the country's air force warned of an attack, including in regions bordering Poland, forcing the NATO member to board a plane to ensure air safety.
Fires have been reported in at least three districts of Kiev, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram, Reuters reported.
Doctors hospitalized two civilians in the Darnitsky district on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River that divides the city, he added.
"Don't leave the shelters," Klitschko said.
Reuters witnesses heard several loud explosions that they said sounded like air defense units in action.
The scale of the attack was not immediately clear. There were also no reports of strikes or damage in western Ukrainian regions bordering Poland.
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said that Polish and allied aircraft were activated early this morning to ensure the security of Polish airspace after Russia carried out air strikes on western Ukraine.
"The steps taken are aimed at ensuring security in regions bordering the threatened areas," the Command announced on the X social network.
Poland has been on high alert since a stray Ukrainian missile hit the southern Polish village of Przewodow in 2022, killing two people.
Sunday's strikes on Kiev came after officials in the southern region of the city of Mykolaiv reported that three people had been injured in Russian strikes.
A day earlier, a Russian attack killed at least 19 people, including nine children, in the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih.
There was no comment from Russia. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war, which Russia began with an invasion of its smaller neighbor three years ago. Thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainians.
US President Donald Trump, who took office in January after promising to end the war within 24 hours, has tried to broker an end to the conflict. The US announced late last month that it had reached two ceasefire agreements with Russia and Ukraine, including one that would halt attacks on each other's energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian military: 40 drones and 13 missiles shot down
Ukraine's air defense units shot down 13 of 23 missiles and 40 of 109 drones launched by Russia in a nighttime attack, the air force said on Monday, Reuters reports.
It is said that 53 drones were lost, which the Ukrainian military tried to redirect using electronic warfare.
Russian Defense Ministry: 11 Ukrainian drones destroyed
Russian air defense units intercepted and destroyed 11 Ukrainian drones overnight, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.
The drones were destroyed over the border regions of Kursk and Belgorod and over southern Russia's Rostov region, the ministry said in a post on Telegram.
Yuri Slyusar, acting governor of Rostov Oblast, earlier said in a Telegram post that there were no injuries in the attack, but that there were reports of drone debris falling on administrative buildings in one of the regions' districts.
