Greenland's new Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in Copenhagen today that the huge Arctic island will never be "real estate for sale," describing statements from the United States (US) about annexing the Danish autonomous territory as a sign of disrespect.

Tensions between Washington and Copenhagen have been high since US President Donald Trump repeatedly said the US wanted to take control of Greenland, citing security reasons and refusing to rule out the use of force to seize the island.
"We will never, ever be a property that everyone can buy, and that's the message I think is most important to understand," Nielsen told reporters alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

It is his first visit to Denmark since taking office as head of Greenland's coalition government, following the victory of his center-right party, the Democrats, in parliamentary elections held in March.
"We are now in a situation where we have to remain united," Nielsen said, adding that "the statements from the US show no respect."
"I completely agree," the Danish Prime Minister said.
