British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose Labour Party fared very poorly in local elections, is facing demands from 64 of his party's MPs to resign, including four who have resigned from their ministerial posts, the BBC reported tonight.
MPs are publicly demanding that Starmer either resign immediately or set a deadline for him to step down.
Starmer gave a speech after the election debacle in which he claimed to prove the "doubters" wrong.
According to him, his government made mistakes but "made the right major political moves."
However, the deputies are demanding his departure.
BBC political analysts say Downing Street will be delighted by the news that influential Labour MP Catherine West has dropped the idea of seeking a change in the party's leadership.
Instead, she asked Starmer to set a deadline for him to step down, that is, to schedule an election for a new party leader in September.
